Foam construction quandry... Posted by StoneWheel on Feb 17, 2013
I'm looking for some sage foam-construction advice, folks. I'm working on my very first foam constructed puppet, and I'm using "The Foam Book" as a guide. It's going well, but as I'm cutting pieces to construct the head and body of my character, I'm wondering about how to cover the puppet with fabric. Should I be covering the pieces (using spray adhesive or glue gun)before I attach them or add them to the puppet, or should that be done after the entire puppet is constructed? I would appreciate any advice anyone could offer.

I complete the head including mouth plate but minus ears and nose. then I spray my fabric with glue. I put the face down first because I want that the smoothest. I also make sure the mouth is open. this gives me enough fabric to tuck over the lips. I then smooth out one side then the other. This takes patience, pulling lifting it back up off the foam. pulling in a different angle, etc until it is smooth. The fabric should meet basically forming a Mohawk from about the eyebrow, over the head, all the way down. you can cut this and Henson stitch it for a nice seam.
Then I complete the body and do it separate. Then attach legs, arms, ears and nose. I don't actually connect the head and body. I use a neck tube on the head that goes through and out the body. This gives great movement to the head and hides the puppeteer's arm and aids in costume changes all at the same time.

Thanks, ArthurS. I appreciate your input. I went with gluing piece-meal this time, but I'll try spray adhesive with the body. I'm going to try the neck tube idea, too.
BTW, do you know of any how-to videos on ding the Henson "invisible" stitch?

Sorry, that should be "how to do" the Henson stitch. Thanks.
