Crash from Crash and Bernstein Posted by crash2.0 on Mar 02, 2013
I am trying to make a Crash style puppet for a college art class. I need to be "pro quality" according to my professor to count as "art". So i might be in over my head, but ima give ita go. Which pro puppet pattern is best and does anyone have some newb tips to start off on the right foot? Ive read the pro tutorials and watched youtube vids, so i guess i could just use personal tips?

So an art teacher insist that your work be "pro"? Odd approach to art. Perhaps they just want to make sure you take the time to do it clean and not just rush through it. That is really what making a professional puppet is all about. Clean seams, no messy glue gobs etc. Project Pupppet has a full line of patterns and they are all good. If it is the head shape you are looking for then I would suggest the Melonhead or Roly pattern.
Hopefully you have sewing skills. That is the most important thing when making puppets like this in my opinion. Keep your seams straight and even. You can make the puppet with any anti-pill polar fleece that you find in regular stores but the "pros" tend to use Antron Fleece that you can only obtain at certain times from places like Out of The Box Puppets. Currently they are out of white and flesh but there is some caramel stripped or lovely paprika available. Your other option would be to go with fake fur and make more of a monster puppet. Fake fur is readily available in fabric stores.

BTW: Crash is a copyrighted character. You where not thinking of duplicating him where you? I would really doubt your art teacher would go for that.

ya its actually more a university thing... "the only difference in art and just playing around is quality" I hear that so many darn times lol. Awesome Roly pattern it is, thank you!
and actually... I have never sewn before and I am kinda scared of needles..its one reason why I chose this...to hopefully get good at it...

Just take your time and keep things neat. If you hand stitch everything do not get impatient. Keep the stitches small and even. If you are going to use a machine do some practice runs on scrap material. You want a nice even seam allowance when you use a machine use the marks on the strike plate or go by the width of the pressure foot.
