To wig or not to wig Posted by Crafty Lady on Mar 05, 2013
My most recent roadblock has been wigs, but i think i now have it under control.   I thought i would share some of my discoveries.   I am making a wig cap out of sticky gauze,[wrapping moderate size pieces around a Styrofoam egg {a bit larger than the head} covered with a light plastic bag.  Then i pat it with dilute Elmer's glue.   After that dries, i knot 2 or 3 strands of bulky yarn in various lengths.  I cut them apart just below the knot.  I soak the knots in dilute glue briefly, then when dry, i cut most of the knot away to provide a flat surface to glue to the cap.  When cured, i style them with a tooth brush. I have also glued them directly to the head, but as i want wigs, this seems to work.   I attach the flat yarn knots with E6000 or shoe goo.   The wigs are held temporarily to the heads with "Aliene's Tackit over and over".

Has anyone else found a better way?      Stringaly yours,  Crafty lady

Do you have pictures?  I don't do a lot of wigs, but when I do I make a wig cap (usually with Pellon). I sew the hair to the cap.

Sorry, i don't have photos.   I tried the sewing way, but the coverage was unsatisfactory.

Thanks for your reply

Great idea for wig caps and making the wigs. So when you say "sticky gauze",  is this what you mean? http://www.acebrand.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/AceBrand/Home/Products/Catalog/?PC_7_RJH9U523007440I2J5O2R30225000000_nid=7KJ40432QCgsKG7SM2H484gl4TW8S08GCHbl

No,  i didn't mean any type of Ace bandage.  This is a professional gauze that i got several boxes of at a yard sale.  When i needed it and opened the sterile box, i found that it had gone yellow with age.  However, i didn't throw it away [ pack rat here].   When i was looking for something light but strong to make the wig caps....there it was.   In Order to shape it, i had to wet the gauze.  I found that the sticky does not last after it gets dry, but does last long enough for the glue treatment.

BTW the reason i use wigs at all, rather than attach the 'hair' directly to the marionettes, is that i need so many of them that i hope to use them in several roles.
