Cone shaped head Posted by MsPuppet on Mar 05, 2013
I need to make a puppet with a cone shaped head. Rather than reinvent the wheel, has anyone found any tips to make a conical shaped head?

If it needs to be more of a pointed cone like a traffic cone then wouldn't that be a wide triangle of foam glued on seam then maybe added on top of your normal round head puppet pattern? Just a thought. If not maybe elongate the Punto pattern.

I have not made a cone head but I repaired a few purchased. They can get top heavy and try to fall off your hand when you talk if there is too much weight at the top with it being so tall, keep it light. I found that putting a square of foam behind my wrist in the back of the neck helped me keep the puppet on my hand better. I had to put more support like circle halfway down inside and one I had to put wire in. The narrow pointed head does not have much support for hair and it would flop over after a lot of use. Hard to make a hat for that shape head. But they were some of our favorite characters.

This is the pattern I used to make a cone-shaped had for my Pierrot puppet.
Glue along the top and long, straight side, and you have the cone. If you took a head pattern and cut off the top portion of the head and used the pattern shape for the lower part of the head to meet the bottom of the cone, you would have a cone-head. Shorten the cone as much as you need to get the proportions you are looking for. That might be one approach, anyway.
P.S. Shawn, I haven't said anything about the new format because it was mostly six of one or half-dozen of the other for me. Not anymore. It is SO much easier to add pictures from my gallery than before, the new setup has my official and grateful okey dokey!
