Dying Fabric - Before or After Cutting? Posted by Mr.B on Mar 08, 2013
Just got a supply of some white Antron Fleece (Thanks Out of the Box!) and I was contemplating some designs, but I wasn't sure if it made more sense to cut the pieces first and then dye the fabric, or dye the approximate amount needed and cut after it has been dyed.

Thoughts?  Comments?  Warnings?

You are welcome, our pleasure.  Thanks for the business.  One thing to keep in mind is that cut pieces, let say a left and right side of the head, might take the dye differently then the colors might not be a consistent overall. Tat could still happen on your single piece of fabric, but I have found that even cutting that looks more consistent than two separate pieces.  Also, if you you dye in two batches yu could come out with vary different results. If you dry the fabric it will shrink, so you have to take that into consideration.  Dyeing small pieces individually for eyelids and such give you the options of multiple colors.  My preference, test dye small swatches, but dye larger quantity then cut.

You are welcome to give me a call next week if you need to chat about the dyeing.

I agree with Julie. As a rule I think you want to dye a larger piece of fabric then cut. Not only is there the shrink factor but when it comes to other fabrics especially your cut edges can fray or degrade. Not something  you have to worry about with Antron really but looser weaves will really fray on you.
