Hello From Houston Posted by systemcat on Mar 29, 2013
Hi,

I started to try and build decent puppets starting back in '09. The one crafted back then wasn't made from sturdy materials but given what was going on back then, there wasn't much choice in designing. It was my first to use *an* arm rod. Building ones with two arm rods didn't happen till much later. The first puppet I ever made was actually sewn back in '95 and was a simple hand puppet. In between that time and '09 I fiddled with a simple take on animatronics which went from doing cosmetic work on RC cars to trying to work over a piece constructed from Lego Mindstorms bits. After the one rod hand puppet built in '09, I then breaked from this hobby till early '11. That is when I made a couple simple hand puppets even more simple than the one made two years before. One was a hit because it worked with the cosplay I was doing at the convention I was attending, the second was a piece that takes explaining. It was meant to help relax people nervous in front of the camera (I interview people). Because of the one I used with my cosplay was such a big hit I decided to collect puppets with the intent of using them at the same convention next year. While I got a few nice finds in this collecting I soon wanted to start making my own again for wanting to save money. This building started around April last year and I have greatly improved since that restart to this hobby. Sadly I'm only really proud of two of them out of four, and now there is a another in the works I hope not to mess up on. I'm entering this forum in hoping the members here can help me with building advice and tips on being a better puppeteer.

Thank you !

I forgot in that post there was some later attempted work in the idea of animatronics. I think making two takes of K-9 from Doctor Who counts as well.

Welcome! I'm in the Houston area too, and so is Julie (Out of the Box Puppets).  There is a  Creative Ministries festival in Pearland in 2 weeks. The featured team is exceptional.

In May I'm teaching a puppet making class.

This forum is great. You will enjoy being part of this group.

Cool to meet others in Houston here !

I didn't know about that at all, please share the details. Like is there a website, address, days and hours this'll be happening, so on.

I'd love to share the pieces I'm proud of there if I can, and hopefully what I'm working on now will be done in time.
