Quetzalcoatl Being Made ... Posted by systemcat on Apr 01, 2013
The most visually complex puppet I've ever made, and it still needs more work done to it clearly.

Look good. Lot of patience to do all the detailing.  Are you planning on air brushing?

Thanks guys , it felt like an all day event on the detailing.

... I wish I owned an air brush. So that being the case, what I'm doing is brushing on the paint. Ran out yesterday afternoon of the color I was using and I can't re-continue till tomorrow on that front. Not for lack of motivation but because I can go get the paint before then. (My doctor has told me not to drive right now so I'm dependent on rides from others). Currently I'm in a debate on using two colors on the wings instead of one color. This is meant to come off as a statue of sorts and that's why I want the coloring to remain simple.

Since today no painting can happen, I'm going to be doing the foam bits detail on the back. ...When I post photos of the back I want you guys to remember some thing. I have to have an open back in the head area. When putting my hand into the head, I need to force it in. This will later be disguised by feathers.

Well you know that the old Greek statues used to be in full color right? Check out the images results for this Google search. http://www.google.com/search?q=greek+statues+painted  I think you may be right though. Most folks don't think statues are in full color.

BTW: For those who do not know what an Quetzalcoatl is, here is the Wikipedia entry on it.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quetzalcoatl  I recognized what it was from your first image but did not know what they where called.   Love it when you learn something unexpected!

You know something that can help it look more like stone after you paint is to splatter it with grey or black paint. On a piece this size it may be easiest to use an old tooth bush. Fill the brush with paint then you pull back on the bristles with your finger and release pointed toward the puppet.

If you really want to learn some cool techniques then try this Google Search: http://www.google.com/search?q=faux+stone+painting+techniques  It is amazing what can be done with just paint!

Thanks for the tip , but I want this to stay simple in it's painting.

I think it could still use a little more touching up but it's essentially finished.

Really nice! Love the eyes.  How are you doing those again? Your avatar puppet has them also and I really like them.

Thank you very much .

You're the second person to ask me about that style of eyes, and I'm going to find it a kicker if you also build puppets (which I assume you do). The other person, what I've seen of their work, is a fine crafter also of this. (Which puzzles me why she hadn't thought of this already).

The eyes are Christmas tree bulbs. I'll relay the steps here that I wrote out to that friend that questioned me on that matter on DeviantART.

1: Cut a very tiny hole where you intend the eye to be.
2: Remove the metal brace that tops the bulb.
3: On top of where you want the eye placed, put the bulb in place over the tiny hole and push the exposed top of the bulb through the fabric or foam.
4: Screw back on the metal brace to the bulb.
5: Glue the metal brace from the underside of the fabric or foam to secure the bulb.
