New No Name Walking Birds Posted by Patmur on Apr 06, 2013
Message ImageThis is a pic of the beginning of our Walking Birds.  The legs and tummies are together and I am starting on the head.  I started at the feet because I knew I would have the most trouble with the head...so I put it off.  Now is the time.

A Big..Big thanks to Julie from Out Of The Box for all the encouragement, sharing information and LOTS of scraps.  All of the fabric is from her.   She also said be original.  OK. Our Team decided they wanted boots on the birds.  So with some of the scraps, they are getting "boots".  Message Image One of each style.  What do you think?
I will be using little white plastic rings to put the laces in, so some sewing left to do.

LOVE the colors on the boots! And why should birds not have boots, after all? They really look nice.

It is unique!  They look like they will be super cute!  We performed this weekend at Creative Ministry Solutions Festival with our "slinky birds" and they were a big hit!  I don't think I ever put a picture of them here.  Need to do that!

A picture of the head so far.  I am thinking the head will be totally detachable.  The neck will be attached to the puppeteers hand, so once I cover this & detail it, It will be done???  Anything you see needs changing?

Looks good to me.  How does the fit fill on your hand? The only reason I ask that is because sometimes with non traditional head shapes and manipulation methods you might need some extra support inside the head. For example a piece of round foam glued inside the main head cavity that rest against the back of the hand/wrist. Remember that the hand entering from behind the head not coming up through the body then bending to go into the mouth.  May not be an issue but keep it in mind.

Surprisingly, it moves very easy. But with the added weight of the neck attached to the hand, extra support would be a great idea. I have backed the mouthplate a 1/2" further into the head to give more room for the beak anyway, making the head cavity a little smaller but not enough to touch for support.
