Fur Question Posted by andruppets on Apr 22, 2013
Does anyone know if you can custom dye white fur to another color?

Have never tried this but have read several sights where folks have tried this...http://fursuit.livejournal.com/2826105.html

I have used sharpies on fur before to color small areas although I did not use the method described in the link Julie provided but simply "drew" on the part of the fur I wanted colored. I've never colored a full piece.  I think you are best to find a piece of fur that is the right color to start with. Since most all faux furs are synthetic they just do not dye easily with normal dyes.  You need acid based dyes to color synthetics and they are really toxic and hard to work with.  So I would say that the answer for most to this question would be no.

Andrew,
Are you looking for a certain color?  I try to keep track of fur companies, maybe I can point you in the right direction.

No I just have a couple yards of white fur on hand and I don't use white very often so I wanted to see if there was anything else I could do with it. But thanks though

You can add the look of texture, lines etc. with an air brush or a very careful hand at spray painting.  For stripes cut your pattern pieces and use an edge of cardboard to create a sharp line. Spots...create a fabric template with holes to lay over the fur.  Pull the fur through the holes if the pile is long enough then spray.  Experiment with a couple of pieces and techniques.

In this possum photo the white fur is shaded grey where the to furs meet. Message Image

In this photo the lines are created with the technique I described above, this was done on fabric, but would work on fur with a little practice. Message Image

Julie,
When you use spray paint what type do you use? The reason I ask is because in the past when I've used spray paint on fabric or fur I've used Design Master brand.  It is a floral spray paint.  Seemed to work better the regular spray paint you get at the hardware store. I did find a few resources for fabric spray paint but I've never used these.

First link is Michaels and is for Tulip brand paint. They also make puffy and other fabric paints. The second is direct to Simply Spray brand and it looks like you can pick it up at both Michaels and JoAnn's

I use regular walmart brand spray paint.  I have used one brand specifically for silk flowers or fabric, but I don't remember the brand.  I used that one only because the walmart brand didn't have to right color. I thought the smell was much stronger in the fabric paint and was a bit overpowering.

I have found the key is light coats and a clean working nozzle.  Some brands of paint, even the better brands start to spit over time which can be a problem with delicate areas.

Yes floral paints have a very strong smell to them. Have to make sure you have good ventilation.
