Trying a new style for me - casted heads Posted by ArthurS on Apr 30, 2013
Hello there. Been gone awhile. Nothing too exciting to report. Made some more generic monster puppets to add to Etsy. Just signed up for a zombie convention in September. But these expensive puppets won't sell well there at their prices. So I have to come up with something else.
I'm going to try 'simple' hand puppets. Well the body will be simple. But I'm going to try to try to sculpt a mold for the head and run latex casts. I might cast the hands too, but haven't decided as I don't really know what I'm doing! I currently cast teethe, horns, tongues, ears, etc for my puppets. But nothing of this scale.
But before I try a complex sculpt of a zombie head. I thought I'd try something more simple. Like a clown for the convention I'm going to in 3 weeks. So here is the project:
Here's my initial sculpt. I may hack the top of his head off and add a... prop to go along with the convention. waiting word from the convention host.
Got the go-ahead. One step closer.
First layer of mold done including 3 registration points (short dowels stuck in before setting). Sprayed with non-stick baking spray. Top layer added.
Mold done and cleaned. Looks good. middle of back is really thin. Added a piece of felt and cardboard to the back for strength (felt in between because the plaster and cardboard won't touch everywhere. The felt gives it the 'cookie filling' buffer).
The nose is going to be interesting to see if it will release when the latex hardens. We'll see. Mold taped together and first coat of latex poured...

Looking forward to seeing how this comes out. I would suggest maybe pulling the back of the mold off first. Then work the latex free from the edges for the front down to the nose the "pop" the nose out last.

Turned out pretty good I would say. Have to agree with Lola though that he is a bit creepy looking, then again what clown is not.
