The mouth of the roly puppet Posted by Jeroen van Ooijen on May 28, 2013
Hello all,i have watched some videos about the mouthplate of a roly puppet, the patern says to add a filt mouth and later you put it insideout and the mouth is done. But before i'll do this i have a question.
In the videos i see people stick the mouthplate with hot glue, why they do that? please tell me,i'm very curious.

Hello Jeroen,
maybe I can attempt to help with this question, we as puppet builders want all our creations to be as strong as possible and to last as long as they can, so I assume that when you say they 'hot Glue' the mouth in you are either referring to the felt being glued down or the actual mouth plate being glued into the head of the puppet, well, in either instance, its that hot glue is just so quick and easy to use, but at the same time, it is strong and the glue itself lasts for a very long time, so it means that the puppet will be stronger and the glue itself will probably still be going strong when the puppet is falling apart!! I hope this helps you to understand, but most puppet builders use what they like to use when putting the puppet together, this doesn't mean that its the only way to do it though, you can use whatever glue you prefer to use, and whatever works best for you when building your puppets.

I personally use contact adhesive to stick down the inner fabric of my puppets mouth (most of the time its felt) to the mouth plate of the puppet (usually foam core board) and then I use hot glue to stick the mouth plate into the puppets head, but I understand that the instruction for the roly puppet might suggest you stick the mouth plate in first, then stick down the felt, but this is just one way of doing it, go with what feels best for you and what might be easier as well!!
