Re: Hello Fellow Puppet lovers Posted by PieroniPuppets on Aug 07, 2013
Thanks a lot. I'm using sheet foam. These started as a really basic roly type base (i guess?) then I've made basically a dome and simply glued right on top then I'm just cutting, gluing, layering on smaller pieces for the detail. Additive vs. the subtractive process that I use when I sculpt. I have though about sculpting foam blocks to see what I can do there, but Im sticking to refining my personal techniques with this approach for now since these first 2 I started adding extra definition have been even better than I anticipated. I mean, I thought my first few puppets where cool but as soon as I started trying what i have with these I know I have majorly leveled up so to speak. And am excited by the idea that I can only get better from here. I have only few pics here. But its neat to see how seriously rough it looks before I do the skin.
Again, this place is AWESOME! Until recently I only have my my wife Julie to "shop talk" with. BTW She honestly is the one who took my "I've always wanted to make puppets..." statement that she's heard for years every time I saw a puppet, and got to work finding me resources, videos, inspiration photos, and rounding up the materials. I honestly dont know why, as much art as I've produced in my life, I had never even tried a puppet!!! I'm the artist, Thank God my wife is the brain around here and knew that the only thing keeping me from doing what I wanted was my lack of research and just feeling I didn't even know where to start, lol. But I have to admit I have been pretty stubborn in that I watched a few tutorials at the very beginning that she had saved for me, but I watched just to get a feel for the materials I needed and such but then have been that guy that "doesn't need instructions!" and was really trying to just create MY kind of puppet, where she is on me to check this and that out constantly, I probably should have been, would probably be further along.... But, I have to hand it to her, Im very grateful she convinced me to join up with this site. Never really been a computer guy (yes, you may recall my degree in graphic design...... well yeah, got the degree, paying the bill, and Im worthless at it! and really no desire for it, I like tangible, hands on creating)
ANYWAY, Probably rambling now (but I was up quite late digging through this site lol).
I know I've stumbled on a lot that is working well for me but I also know Im certainly still missing lots of basic techniques that once I learn will improve my products even more. Again, Thank you SO very much.

You are doing great Faron! I'm impressed. There is really nothing wrong with building from sheet foam, and they tend to be a bit lighter then if you sculpt out of block foam. Actually when I a do make hand in mouth puppets sheet foam is my preference. Sculpting in block foam can get pretty messy.
I always say there are not rules when it comes to puppet making. Granted there are somethings that may be kind of universal but I've even seen builders break those and come up with better ways. It sounds like you may be a bit like me. It is not so much the instructions I want as to be able to see the "innards" of things. For example your picture of the puppets without the fabric tells me exactly how you got the shape even without reading the text.

That was the thing that first attracted me to this site and I think the same could be said for others. A lot of us are self taught and having fellow enthusiasts/professionals each with innate, unique, but always innumerable skills contribute to, critique or comment on your work is soul boosting indeed. For good soul measure, I genuinely dig your work
