Need an opinion. Posted by Arachanox on Nov 22, 2013
I would like for someone to give an opinion on Jim. Or this video if you will.
Most people around where I'm at, don't really fancy puppets. I just need any help I can get to improve his character and performance!
And if you would like to see another character,
Please let me know!

Here's his latest video:

My biggest critique is that yo need to try and keep him level. It is a common mistake. You need to practice walking. With puppets you use a slight up and down movement to indicate that they are walking. Moving up or down in the framing of a video or on stage normally indicates they are walking up or down stairs. Even when they do this you still use the slight up and down movement as they do this to indicate they are walking. When dancing try not to become to crazy with the movement. You always want to have isolated movement even when going crazy. Move, stop, move stop etc.

I would also suggest you give him more purpose.  Put him in a situation with a plot, or a challenge, rather than just making a video to make one.  He can lipsync to a song (hell that was a lot of what Sam & Friends was), but give it a bit of humor rather that just a lip sync.

Also, if you want a great example of puppet dance watch this one.

Most casual viewers would think that Jim took the easy road by never showing the feet, but a puppeteer knows how difficult it is to make a puppet actually look like he's tap dancing while lip-syncing the song.  Kermit never misses a single step, and he's always level (as Shawn stated) and in this case, you buy into his dance 100%.
