bad puppetry should be outlawed Posted by cuttlefishstudio on Nov 28, 2013

non puppeteers should do puppetry proves it is not as easy as it looks.

Great looking puppets.... really AWFUL puppetry.  Oh I hope they're not really going to be performing their own puppets.

They need to do some training with whoever trains Avenue Q people... Either that or they're doing faux bad puppetry, just like good singers in movies when they're cast in a role where they have to sing 'badly'.

Its really bad puppetry but I think its rather funny! I also think that it was very intentional by the producers.
Meh! What can I say.....I love glee. There I said it out loud.
The Puppets are very cool though. I will have the one of Blaine especially if he comes with it! LOL

Has a certain something about it...I liked it. ok they will improve on the lip sinc, but hey... I have my off days too.

Knowing Glee I doubt they are going to have the actors manipulate the puppets. Not sure why the lip sync is off. Could be for this they did simply give them to the actors to play with.  I'll admit also... I am a Glee fan. It is a corny show but they know it and embrace it. They seem to know just when to make fun of them selves to make it all work.

Wow...makes me want to revisit mine to compare :D. It is bad, but seems purposefully bad.  I would think non-puppeteers would figure out to move the mouth at every syllable.

If bad puppetry was outlawed no one would ever have time to get good.  But you would think before it gets on TV that they would have honed that skill. Maybe no one has the guts to tell the stars they are not doing it right. They were good looking puppets, love those eyes, but I was having a hard time knowing which actor each was.

I don't know. I'm not a performer, and I struggle to wrap my head around the concept. I think it can be very easy to overthink it. I've met performers who pick up a puppet and 'get it' straight away, and others who need the movement explained to them. Let's face it, nobody really thinks about how we move our mouths to talk, we just do it. Actors and singers of course learn about how the mouth creates sounds, but that doesn't necessarily translate into "ok, my mouth moves at this time and my hand does this".

Maybe no one has the guts to tell the stars they are not doing it right. They were good looking puppets, love those eyes, but I was having a hard time knowing which actor each was.

The more I think about it, the more likely I think it's done on purpose. Again, it goes back to what I was saying about good singers pretending to be bad ones. If the actors are playing like high school students then they will have 'high school' abilities at performing puppets. The 'bad puppetry' adds to the believability of their age and abilities, as well as adding twee-ness to the puppetry. I agree though that the puppets looked good. I wonder how much work Rick Lyon gets these days; they looked like his. I suppose these days though most muppet-types will...

I've never seen Glee and I can appreciate that this may appear poor to professionals, but as a non-performer, I'd love to be even this good! I kinda enjoyed this
