I really need to learn how to model. Got a 3-d printer about two years ago and still have not used it. Just can't seem to find the time to invest in learning the programs.

Start with Sculptris http://pixologic.com/sculptris/ - it's free, very easy to learn and perfectly usable for character modelling.

Here are two model that are made for painting the surface (no ventilation holes)

They are currently in costume size - I usually scale them to 16cm width when I print them for a puppet.

Back in 2014 when this was asked of Tioh, he was using Lightwave 3d, but was planning on moving to Sculptris.
