Puppet stands? Posted by cathicks on Mar 30, 2014
Hi there!

I was wondering if anyone knew of any good puppet racks for sale online? I'm looking for something similar to a hat rack, or a Folkmanis display rack. Or maybe something I can attach to a slim section of wall? I'm not as good with building large objects out of wood as I am with building puppets so I'd prefer to buy something and modify it lightly if I have to. Right now I am using IKEA paper towel holders to prop up my smaller puppets, and I have some small music stand bases as well for larger ones. Looking to minimize space with a tower.

I've found this but it looks like it might be tiny and for a child's height - https://www.google.com/shopping/product/10028772676136391001?q=puppet+rack&espv=210&es_sm=91&bav=on.2,or.r_cp.r_qf.&bvm=bv.63808443,d.aWc,pv.xjs.s.en_US.9CjFb4DKbRI.O&biw=1344&bih=727&tch=1&ech=1&psi=NPI4U4nsMeTXygHW1YHIAg.1396241018731.3&ei=cPI4U_LHOoPlyQGfuoCoDQ&ved=0CHIQpiswAQ

Does anyone have anything they are using that is working for them?

Take a trip to the hardware store and check out the plumbing section. PVC pipe is inexpensive and easy to work with and with all the different connectors you can make just about anything  you want. Here is an instructable to give you an idea of what can be done. http://www.instructables.com/id/PVC-Puppet-stand/

Here is a variation of PVC with a wood base. http://puppetsandstuff.com/community/index.php/topic,8002.0.html  I know you are not good with wood but give it a look for ideas.

There is also this thread on the subject. http://puppetsandstuff.com/community/index.php/topic,7539.0.html it has in it the two videos that Stiqpuppets did on the subject showing a single unit and the a wall unit that can hold more then one made out of PVC.

Just don't know that you are going to find anything online pre-made to suite your needs which is why gave you the above. Now one thing pre-made that I have heard of puppeteers using are plungers. Again a trip to the hardware store so might as well breeze through the PVC while you are there.

They are a bit pricey, but retail supply stores might carry something.  A quick search found this:

Thank you so very much Shawn! I will def take a look around the hardware store this weekend. PVC should be much easier to work with than wood. Woot!!

Thank you as well TygerMin!

PVC is great and easy to work with.

I used 1"x1" wood cut about 3' long and then drilled out space to insert dowels. Glued and screwed on the wall and I was able to hold 8-10 puppets at a time over my workspace. I would have gone PVC but I had this in the garage already so that made my decision for me.
