Type of curtains for my puppet show. Posted by squirrely on Mar 31, 2014
I've been using black curtains for my Pvc pipe puppet stage. Front and side of the stage. It's a rectangle stage. I would like to get it more colored now. What are the best curtains to get, so no one can see me from behind and the sides.

Just keep your black curtains and add color ones over the top of them. That way you don't have to worry about the translucency of the color fabric. If you think it is going to be a permanent color change then simply sew the color to just below the pocket insert of the black curtain. This gives you an added effect of a nice black outline of sorts to your set up. If you want change things out you could maybe use Velcro to attach the color fabric. Put the female fuzzy side on the black curtain so if you want to have black without the color they won't get stuck on things. Instead of solid color you might think about doing bunting in color over the black. In that case you could gather up the color at each end and put either a wire loop that hangs over the PVC or attach them with Velcro at corners.

Thank you about the Velcro ideas, Mr. Sorrell. Putting fabric on the curtains, changing them around when I need to.

Just be aware that the male or sticky side of Velcro can be a pain in the rear and get caught on other things when you store the curtains if you are not careful. Actually often what we would do is put a solid line of female Velcor on the receiving end, in this case your black curtains, and then use small 1-2" strips spaced out on what every we wanted to attach it to. Just enough to keep it in place. I would normally start with a strip on each end then one in the middle. If that was not enough to hold in place I would then place two more strips between the middle and ends. Another trick we often used was to have small pieces of female Velcro handy to place over the male for during storage.
BTW: We would buy the large rolls of Velcro and not the small packages you get at the fabric store. Something like this: http://www.industrialwebbing.net/velcro-brand-sew-on/ Cost less in the long run and you can buy just the side you need. Also they use Hook and Loop which is really more common. Hook = Male Loop = Female Hmmm.... actually just found this over at Etsy... nice visual and may be cheaper for you. http://www.etsy.com/listing/104294060/velcro-type-velcro-1-inch-10-yds-sew-on

If you ever use back drop type curtains think about the color of your puppets and their hair. When we used black curtains we forgot that most of our puppets had black hair that disappeared. You might hold your puppets up against some colors to see which ones look good with their colors. Even a light yellow can be lined with some cheaper fabric to make it hard to see thru. Then you could have two sided curtains so you could change them up. I like Shawn's idea of adding color on top, one color for all the curtains is pretty boring. But once your show starts the focus won't be on the curtain, it will be on those puppets.

Basically with any curtains, even for your home, measure the width of the space you wish to fill, and double it. eg 2m of space = 4m of material.

You can pin the fabric over the pipe to form a pocket to see what it will look like. I like a generous pocket that is not too tight as it will slide onto the pipe faster. Then where the fabric hits the floor fold it up into a generous hem to the backside to give it some weight and finish the edge. If you have an outdoor show you can slip dowel rods or other PVC to hold down the curtain in a gentle breeze It will depend on the size of your pvc pipe but make sure both ends are generous. The weight of the fabric you choose will also factor into how it gathers if you want gathers. Thinner fabric you may want 2 and a half the width and thicker 2 times might be enough. I think gathers look better than flat fabric and hide better. It helps if you have wrinkle free fabric because you might be taking it down in a hurry and it will be a pain to iron so big a curtain. You can use a handheld steamer on the hanging curtain to get wrinkles out of some fabric. You could line thinner fabric with cheaper fabric to make it less see thru. So far I have been blessed with a big sale of just the right fabric each time I built a new stage curtain. It will be a lot of fabric but it worth it to get good quality if you can afford it. Good luck hope it works out.
