When I posted photos of the Dragons on facebook I was asked about the hair technique. I started posted the "how to" process on our Facebook page if you are interested. Please feel free to ask questions. I am useing the technique on our Just A Head puppet-Shaggy.

HI, Are you  going to do a 'how to' here? I'd be interested.
Re: Hair Technique Posted by Out of the Box Puppets on May 08, 2014
Here you go:
First I determine where the part line on the top of the head. Using a disappearing ink marker I mark the part as well as the hair line around the front and sides of the face. For the Shaggy it has orange hair with yellow accents. I next cut multiple pieces of fleece 6" x 3" wide with the stretch of the fabric running along the 3" width. For each piece of fleece starting in the center bottom cut along the 6" length stopping 1/4" from the top. Cut the two strips on each side of you cut into four strips again stopping before cutting thru the top edge. Repeat with as many pieces as needed. Using hot glue, glue across top uncut edge of one piece of fleece, rolling the fabric to create a long pom pom. Repeat with all fleece. Any questions?

Next I apply hot glue to the top, and top back side of the rolled fleece pom pom. The back side is where the end of the pom pom is rolled. This hides any loose pieces.

Starting in the back of the head, about 3-4" up from the bottom hair line, hot glue the pom with the back side and top pushed against head fabric. Hold in place a few seconds to allow to adhere. Placement of the pom or how high up on the head it is placed is determined by how long the poms are and how long you want the back of the hair. For the dragons I placed the pom on the bottom of the head, so the hair would hang down almost shoulder length. Following a curved angle towards the front of the face repeat adding poms, working out from center back alternating colors if desired.

When you are close to the front hair line, about 2-3 poms away, trim the back top of one pom at and angle without cutting off any of the strips. Place the right behind the front face hair line making sure to hold it flat until secure. Fill in remaining poms from front to back. This is your first row.

I'll work on posting the next steps over the next few days.

So you cut a fringe out of the fleece, and then use it like a tassle? Am I understanding right?

Thanks for sharing!
Re: Hair Technique Posted by Out of the Box Puppets on May 09, 2014
Yes, using the fleece like rolled fringe.

Next steps: For the second row start add poms middle center back about 2" above the bottom row. Again you want to follow an arched shape towards the front of the head. Once you have 3-4 pieces in place lift the loose ends up, squirt a bunch of hot glue randomly on the bottom row, making sure not to go below the bottom edge of the newly placed hair line. Let the second row fall back onto the glue and gently press. You want it to stick to the hit glue, but not compress the hair.

Thanks - that's a really great technique and something I'd never thought of doing before, even though it should be an obvious one. It is simple to do but creates a fantastic head of hair.

Great technique! Makes for some really nice hair.  We appreciate you sharing it with us.

You are welcome.

Remaining steps.

Repeat the process starting in the back of the head, again placing the poms/fringe 2" of so above the last row. When you are close to the top start working at different angles moving towards the part lines.
