Con Costume - Plan B Posted by TygerMin on May 08, 2014
With the closest parking lots to the convention being sold out meaning a 3/4 of a mile walk, and failure to measure car space, my robot costume will be put off until October. Decided that it would be too much to lug around for 10 hours since the long walk will keep me from changing. So, plan B is going to repurpose an old costume head and since I am into Jim Henson's Creature Shop Challenge, thought I would do a build thread :D
Going to turn this into a one eyed furry tentacle thing. Not sure how to better describe it. It will be wearing a backpack on his chest, which is where a puppet will interact with people from. First step was to work on form:
Then I decided to put on the fabric that will form the eye:
Next up is to drape some fur.

That's a bummer. I liked your robot. Your plan B sounds cool tho~! Can't wait to see how it turns out!

I agree If it was February then I might consider the extra walking, but May in Texas there is no way! Anyway, fur is on:
The eye isn't as "flat" as I had hoped, but I can live with it. Debating with the wife on whether to pupil or not to pupil. Also, the backpack is out. Should have known there wasn't enough room to puppet in one :D So, looking for alternatives. Probably a box that I wear with suspenders.

I'd vote pupil.
Not sure on the backpack/box situation. Having trouble picturing it for some reason so I would have to see it.

The backpack/box thing is like Bruno/Oscar:
Finding a way to hide myself and the operation of the puppet.

Agh ok. I figured that was the basic of it but for some reason my brain wasn't processing. Could you offset the backpack so it's more to your hip/side almost like a baby sling kinda thing. Not sure if it would give a better angle for operating the puppet.

Have you seen Farscape? (Also Creatures Workshop thing...) There's a character in that - Traaltix - that has a visor/breathing apparatus on top of its head. The actor's eyes are covered as the creature doesn't have any. It's all controlled, IIRC, via a backpack or similar solution. I'm probably really misremembering that. Anyway, the point is, you might want to view some of the episode because it sounds like something you might find inspiration from.
They do a lot of hidden problem solving on the show, 'hiding' a lot of the facial animatronics in plain sight.

Yep you need a pupil I think otherwise folks are not going to know it is an eye.

That looks ... weird... not an insult actually, it's just not something I've ever seen before. The juxtaposition of the round puppet head with your flat cyclops is what weirds me out I think. It's an unusual combination. I must say, I'm impressed that you managed to put it all together. I wouldn't know where to begin.
