I don't know if this video has benn posted in the past. If not then enjoy. It talks about Chinese puppetry. But mostly marionettes.

Here is a five-minute YouTube video posted by Taiwan's Ministry of Culture that gives an overview of traditional Chinese glove puppet theater (budaixi):

Needless to say, Chinese glove puppets, marionettes, and shadow puppets are all very cool!

Learn about the "Anatomy of a Chinese Opera Puppet" from head to feet and hats to shoes! This is the first draft of an introduction to the basics of Chinese glove/hand/palm puppets. I will greatly appreciate any suggestions for improving this blog posting and helping to promote these wonderful puppets.

Nicely done blog article! Love the pictures you have chosen they really do break down the puppet and show it's different elements.

I am curious if you are a puppet builder or if you are just promoting the site these are on.  I am not really complaining since it is information that everyone is interested in.  I just kind of was wondering if this is a promotional thing how well you think it is working.  If you are a puppeteer or builder would love to hear some personal stuff from you on your experiences in the field.

Hi Shawn. Thanks for your question. My spouse is the puppet builder in our relationship. Not having an artistic bone in my body, I can only appreciate and help promote the puppets we both enjoy. Unfortunately it is the case that traditional Chinese opera glove puppet theater is on the decline in China and Taiwan. With the passing of each elderly puppetmaster and the declining number of puppet craftsmen and vendors, the art form loses cultural relevance. So about three and a half months ago, we thought we would try to spur some interest in the U.S. It may end up being a quixotic endeavor, but it's fun learning, informing, and hoping others will develop an interest. To that end, I try to make the blog postings as comprehensive and accurate, short and sweet, and non-commercial as possible. If someone wants to purchase a puppet or inquire about finding resources to assemble or handcraft one, all the better because every puppet deserves a good home. For now, it's all a grand experiment and I have no idea how it will turn out. Nevertheless, as a documenter rather than a doer, I will do my best to pass on my spouse's experiences attending Chinese opera puppet exhibitions, workshops, and performances.
