Puppetry stuff in New York, dallas and/or new orleans Posted by kirstycrrr on Aug 17, 2014
We are going on holiday in October and we'll be visiting New York, dallas and Baton Rouge/ New Orleans.

Does anyone have any recommendations of puppetry type stuff to see in or near any of these locations? Otherwise it could end up being two weeks of sports.

I already have some plans to visit puppet kitchen in New York and I'm hoping to get tickets for the lion king too

Or any other cool but nobody knows about it type stuff non puppet related either?

Cool, thanks, but we'll not make it. We only get to dallas 25th, otherwise I'd be all over it!

The Jim Henson Foundation keeps a list of puppetry goings-on in the New York City area. There is usually something going on every week - http://www.hensonfoundation.org/index.php/puppet-happenings/new-york

(be sure to check all the listings in the menu under "Puppet Happenings"..the listings are usually not definitive, but a good place to start)

It's fun to visit the Muppet Whatnot Workshop/Display at FAO Schwartz if you are a Muppet fan (it was still there last time I visited NYC).

There are several small puppet theatres in New York. Here's a list with some - http://redtri.com/new-york/nyc-puppet-show-theaters/

Time permitting, you should consider going to the Ballard Museum of Puppetry in Mansfield, CT. It is a 2 1/2 hour drive from New York, but worth it...especially if you go when they have a special event happening.

As for non-puppet stuff, the NBC Studio Tour is very touristy, but pretty neat. My favourite areas to visit are The West Village, Times Square and DUMBO. You owe it to yourself to get some pizza at Grimaldi's Pizzeria under the Brooklyn Bridge.

My favourite museums in the city are MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) and the Museum of the Moving Image, which has free admission on Friday afternoons - http://www.movingimage.us

Another tip is that if you are going to do a few sightseeing things, look in to buying a New York Site Seeing Pass online before you go, which is usually cheaper than buying it in the city and much, much cheaper than buying individual tickets.

Have fun!

hey, thanks Andrew! I'll check out those links.

We've already got some things organised so going to Lion King and Blue Man Group in NYC and going to see the Dallas Cowboys and Dallas Stars in (you guessed it) Dallas.

Also hoping to get some awesome costumes for Halloween in New Orleans and take in the American Trick or Treat festivities

:D super can't wait!
