Nine millimeters is small. 16 is not quite twice the size.

Ah, when will Americans catch up?
If it helps, I use this site whenever I need to convert between metric and imperial. Just select what measurement you need, plug in your number, and out comes the conversion. http://www.digitaldutch.com/unitconverter/
I use it all the time.

No probs. There are lots of handy converters out there that I've bookmarked over the years. That's the one I use the most.

I have a friend who actually knows in detail why Americans won't switch to Metric, and is maybe gonna do a podcast on it sometime. I barely remember the details of what he said - but it sounds like it's basically some weird fluke of history, and not because non-metric really has any merits to it. (I have heard arguments, like how a base 12 system has more numbers in it. But I don't buy that, because converting between everything is such a hassle.)

Oh wait, I think this link explains it:
http://science.howstuffworks.com/why-us-not-on-metric-system4.htm
Basically, Congress didn't make it mandatory for everyone to switch over back when it was voted on, so nobody switched.
