Now for Something Completely Different!...actually not that different, actually. Posted by Harley on Jul 16, 2017
A puppetry forum? Finally, a place I can discuss puppetry with people without seeming annoying! I am a musician with puppetry as a side-hobby. However, I really wish I could up my puppetry participation in the community! I haven't really gotten far in the community, seeing as how my only puppetry has been through a church and they've replaced me once they got an official puppet team. But I digress. My largest project, which I'm so pleased to announce, is that I'm doing the puppetry for a local production of Little Shop of Horrors! This has been my all-time dream and arguably one of the factors that got me into puppetry! I get to try out the puppets tomorrow for the first time, and I'll post pictures and maybe even links to videos! I'm into puppetry for the illusions. Creating an illusion with these characters is a thrill I have! I've been in theater productions, but I find puppetry a little more interesting AND difficult than normal theater. In normal theater, you have to convey an emotion and embody it. However, in puppetry in theater, you have to embody the emotions AND make another being embody emotions! Making it seem like these characters can be living and breathing organisms! That's all you really need to know about my puppetry life, but if you have any questions about other aspects, such as my musician and theater life, I'm open to answering them!

Welcome to PandS!  Glad you found us. Congratulations on getting the puppeteer gig on Little Shop!

I get what you are saying about theater vs puppet theater. I always felt that the emotions I would express as an actor had to extend and flow through my body into the puppet.  I know it sounds kind of corny and I wouldn't say it was something I consciously thought about I did seem to find myself "acting" with my own body just as much as the puppets.

The illusion of puppetry is amazing!  For me, its the fact that people literally ignore you to focus on the puppet.  Odd thing to enjoy, but when your creation is the focus it feels great!

Would love to see photos and videos when you get them

Welcome . Where are you on the planet? Totally agree with you on the theater v  puppets. Add to it that sets and logistics are also more difficult yet smaller, and then transfer that to movies...  it just escalates. Technically everything gets more difficult, and more restrictive at the same time...but so very cool.

I'm from the U.S., specifically Pennsylvania. And yes. You're a hundred percent correct!
