robot puppet Posted by Onath on Feb 11, 2008
Hey guys I have been working on my robot puppet. The robot is still a long way off from finished but I thought I would share some of the progress.  Let me know what you guys think. By the way ignore the ugly Hu-man.

Great start! Keep us posted on your progress. It looks like you used a foamie for the bottom jaw, but what is the top of the head made from?  Do you have the body designed yet?

That will be a FUN puppet!!! Please show us the process as you finish him!

To answer some questions yes the robot is completely designed already. I always draw the puppet out first.  The bottom jaw is indeed made from foamies and a backing of foam. The top of the head is the easiest part. The top of the head is a plastic cereal bowl from target i think it was 99cents for 4 (they were on sale) it was spray painted silver.  The antenna on top was made from the top of a trashed umbrella, the extra doodadds were made from ikea extra parts. If you go to ikea they have an as is section there they had a bin of plastic parts and screws these are great extras to have for all sorts of projects.  I will talk more about the body when I am closer to finishing it.

Did you use the spray paint for plastic, or regular spray paint?

I used regular spray paint but, I roughed up the surface slightly to give the paint something to adhere to.

Great job ! I'm glad that you mentioned that you start your projects with a good drawing. This is very important part of the building process.

Actually I start with a story or character idea then I do lots of drawings to try and capture the character. Then I redo the drawings from a design prospective(how can I make this work) Then once the puppet looks like a schematic drawing then I build. During the build process something things may change but basically I try to stay real close to my original drawing.
