I need some help with eyes... Posted by Rcdspoon on Feb 21, 2008
Hey gang...

Spoon here with an important question...first I know how to make eyes for my dragon puppets that i build but my question comes in pupil design...normally i use cat eyes from jo-anns...but I want something better.  So here's my question... Where or how do I get or make really awesome reptile (or aka dragon eyes) eyes? If anyone can help please let me know! Thanks again....

Sincerely,

Spoon out!!!!

black spoons or yellow ping pong balls are my suggestion.

there was a really great eye tutorial on the forum a while back. You could use this technique and adapt it to dragon eyes.

Hey Spoon! The thread that Sue linked to is a good one (although it seems to be missing some of the image illustrations at the moment)

Actually for my dragons I have used the cat eyes like you mentioned or painted my own based on the same shape as the cat eyes you can buy.  There are few links in the topic that Sue linked to in the first post and the first one has some great examples of eyes.

Something that I think makes eyes "magical" is the use of metallic paints.  I even use them on people eyes.    It just seems to bring a twinkle to the eye.  Don't forget the highlight in the eye.  Something else I do when I finish painting an eye is cover it in a few coats of high gloss finger nail polish.  I may have given this hint in the past but can not remember. It makes the eye have a watery look much like a real or glass eye.

Why not use marbles?

Why not use marbles?

hmmm... i never thought of that before... will hot glue be able to adhere to the glass or will you have to use contact cement?
Re: I need some help with eyes... Posted by Shawn on Feb 22, 2008
I doubt that hot glue or contact cement well work on marbles.  You would have to look for an adhesive that works on glass.  Perhaps some type of epoxy.  Glass is a "non porous" material and you are more then likely gluing it to a "porous" material like cloth.  I quoted both definitions because it is something you can look for on the adhesive bottle to let you know if it might work.  The manufactures well often use those descriptions when detailing what the adhesive well work on.

If you make a space for the marble to fit in like a space in the foam it should be fine. But, I'm pretty sure epoxy works too.

Perhaps that E6000 glue will adhere it.  It is found in the craft stores and Walmart (craft section).  I believe it says that it will glue glass.  If not, the glue section will SURELY have what you need at the craft store.  I am always amazed at how many different glues are out on the market.

Hope this helps!

I really like the marble idea....so different and interesting!!!
