Owl with moving brows Posted by Nikole H. on Feb 25, 2008
I didn't want to get off too much with the topic of mechanical eyes tutorial but had received some questions about my owl.  I used the technique like the one in the tutorial by puppeteersunite.  I used a heavy gauge floral wire instead of the wire coat hanger in the video.  I also used a dense foam ball for the eyes instead of ping pong balls.  My puppet didn't start out as an owl.  In fact, I was trying for more of a snow monster.  It just turned out in the end to be cuter as an owl by adding feathers and wings.  I'm happy with the end result.  The body is not made with any foam and is a carwash mitt that I found at one of those bargain stores.  I ended up buying up all that they had!!!  HA HA HA.  I only used one but have many left to make more to sell.  It was a joy making and I was able to get a video of it done this weekend, too.  Here is a picture of my owl and a link to its video in youtube.  Thanks for watching!

Very cute! I wondered if it was one of those car wash mitts. I have used them for other things, they work out great for the owl!!

Thanks!  Yeah isn't it a fun material to use?  I just wanted to think outside the box with fabric since I'm so tired of using faux fur and with this, I didn't have to do any sewing...HA HA HA...EVEN BETTER!!!  I wanted to also add the link to my listing on Etsy.  Once again, thank you for looking!

I found one of the mits at Target that had a longer nap.  I took it apart and used the fabric for hair for a puppet.  It worked great.  Close up he looks like he has tiny white dreadlocks.Message Image

Your owl is perfect.  I liked the video too.

This is one reason why I hate not having Internet connectivity at home, and not having a reliable way to get to the librbay very often - I completely missed this awesome thread! The owl is so cute, and I love the car wash mitt idea for bodies and hair. It does seem like natural uses for them.
