I lot of folks beggining in puppetry use what they call Anti-Pill fleece. This is is a two sided fleece used to make blankets, and jackets. It has a one way stretch meaning that it stretches to the left and right or up and down. You can request a sample of Antron from Kathy at http://www.gastage.com/
I would just check your local fabric store and experiment with diferent fabrics. I have seen some nice puppets made from other fabrics other than Antron (muppet fleece)

Depending on the size of your puppet project, sometimes fake fur is easier to use. It usually have a thick backing, so it doesn't matter if you use a little too much glue. I remember my second puppet I built, it was anti-pull fleece, and it was looking great. And then, when I began to glue some of the fleece for extra support the glue cap snapped, and glue leaked all over the body of the character, and it was ruined.

Antron is a one sided fleece. It does stretch one way. What makes it special is it's ability to hide seams . This is because of the way the fabric is woven. This makes it a excellent fabric when filming your puppets.

my 2 cents. Ihave all the books you mentioned. I also have Pannebeckers videos and patterns. However, I would purchase a pattern instead of the books. You can look at pictures on the internet and figure out how to add the features.
Seems to me there is a free pattern or two online, start with that. Then use your imagination to do the rest.

I am very happy that the technique that was started 40 yrs ago by Jim Hensen, Frank Oz & others is now out to the entire world thanks to
the WWW through various web sites & u tube. Imagine ...me sitting in India across the oceans could get some of the foam puppet books and actually prepare these (muppet) puppets. In India even fleece is not very common...so have to use something similar with less elasticity.
I would also recommend another book `Muppets make puppets' by Cheryl Henson. This book suggests some simple materials for puppet
preparation. ...try it out...
I have also got books from Ray DaSilva who sells used books (from UK) through my friend. For me these books are very expensive as the
dollar conversion rates are very high in India & have to depend on friends & well wishers to get it through credit cards.
It is difficult to get pattern books/templates... again the cost factor....so, design your own pattern ....
So, my theory....check out for alternatives...right...so, try to design your own puppet design in the absence of any available pattern. ....you will have a wonderful creation....good luck.
