stringing and controling a cloth marionette Posted by sungglesnort on Mar 08, 2008
So I am now in South Korea teaching English, and I was watching some marionette clips on You tube and I thought to myself "hey learning marionette would be cool and possibly educational." So I wandered to a local store got some string, and some glue and a long limbed stuffed animal monkey.  Kinda like this guy:

Now being the no-expert on marionette stringing and manipulation, how do I go about stringing him up?

Most use what is called a airplane controller but for this guy you could use a simple one such as this:

I'm sure others will have some suggestions on the airplane controller. Puppets and Pals just gave a good decription in a previous post.

This thread should give you a good idea of where to start. It is the Airplane control in it's simplest form.
Stringing your Hazelle Marionette.

The control in the video that Billy linked to is very complicated and not the best place to start. It is also not the traditional Airplane control, but what is often referred to as the pistol grip or fish controller. Also the lady in the video is Diane Houk who is the executive directory of PAI. PAI has one of the largest collections of Hazelle puppets that are referenced in the thread I linked to above.  It is right here in KC MO (Independence to be exact) where I live.

I did a similar thing with a teddy bear a while ago...I wrote a short tutorial on how to do it on my blog:

(I did make a trick marionette version, but in the tutorial, it's written for normal stringing)
