Avenue Q "Rod" Puppet Posted by Leiterz18 on Mar 13, 2008
Hey all.

For the past two months, I have been obsessing over the Broadway Musical "Avenue Q" for a while, and I've been practicing many of the voices from it. Now after a lot of thinking, I have come to options.

1. Does anyone sell their puppets around here, I was wondering if someone can make it for me and I'll pay them.

2. Custom Make it myself, it's just I don't know how long it would take me since I'm am a first class beginner.

I'm also clueless about how much money it would take to make/buy one.

Please post!

While I can appreciate your admiration of "Avenue Q" I would encourage you to move beyond simply duplicating what they have done.

1. I don't know of anyone who sells the puppets as stock items.  They are copyrighted characters so it would be a bit on the grey side of legal to do so.

2.  Even fist class beginners have had great success with building their first puppet. Many have used the patterns from http://www.projectpuppet.com/ with great results.

If you can find someone to build you a replica of an "Avenue Q" puppet expect to pay a high price.  I would really be surprised if anyone would do it for under $100 and you could pay up to $500 or more.

Thank you Shawn for telling me. For some time I have been looking around for someone to make one for me. I called companies on the web that I found and they told me that they would make it for me for $1,500!.

I thought it was nuts. I would love to pay through the range of $100-300 though

A customer asked me to make a human arm puppet from a picture a few months ago.  I said I couldn't do a replica but could do something similar which they were happy with.

The pale green fabric for the skin was from a dressing gown bought at a sale and the human arm top was made from two tops for age 5 years - I cut the second one up to make the tube shapes for the arms.

Customer was happy with it and turned out the Puppet was to be Nicky in a school production of Avenue Q!

Is the Rotondo Puppet Pattern much more expert than the beginner patterns?

And would you suggest buying the CD version, or the printing version?

I know we're not supposed to sell avenue q puppets replicas because they're copyrighted, but I'm currently working personnal replicas... If it's succesful I could make you one...

it's little video I made with some pictures of the building process of my replicas... Don't take care of rod... He's really a piece of crap... I didn't knew how puppet making worked...

You are coming along very well Darkranth.  I don't want to get off topic but you have some great work there.  It seems that you want some materials to cover your puppets in Canada?  Do you live in a small town or near the big city?  Some places that you can look is fabric stores, if you live near a city then you can have a bigger selection of materials, however if you live in a smaller town/city then you will be limited and may not carry very good materials. I live in Canada as well and most times I have to order from the US to get the right materials (even though I live in a large city).  If you want more ideas then let us know and we will try to direct you.

Hope to see them complete soon.....

I'm really looking for either a Princeton or a Rod puppet in decent quality (no offense darkranth) and I don't know if anyone here can make one for me at the price of $100-200. Is there?

Hello,
I may be able to help you with this and stick around your budget, but the puppet cant be exactly the same due to legal reasons.

Contact me for more details.

Cheers,
Dan
