Stretchy fur Posted by Ron G. on Mar 22, 2008
A few months ago I saw some socks at a thrift shop, and they looked pretty cool. They were new with the tags still attached, and were manufactured in Taiwan by "Hue." There were two or three pairs of them, and they were made of a short pile plush fur, like teddy bear fur, on a stretchy backing. (I can't remember now if it stretched along just one weave direction or both.) The socks were made for young girls and weren't big enough for me to wear on my own hands comfortably, but in retrospect I wish that I would have picked them up anyway.

I've looked around in fabric stores and online and I haven't found any of that type of fabric for sale, and the socks at the thrift shop are long gone. I've found similar socks sold by the Hue company online, but not the fabric itself. Maybe I'm using the wrong search terms. Is this a common fabric that I just don't know about, or is it the mutant freak of faux fur?

PS
The sock in the photo on Amazon looks more like terrycloth, but the socks that I saw and handled were like colorful teddy bear plush fur - at least one pair had a faux animal print, like tiger or leopard.

Ron,
I'm not quite sure, but they look like some socks that I have.  They're very soft, stretchy, kinda furry and very comfortable.  I have three pairs and they are all multi colored.  I'm not sure who the maker is, I just checked a pair and did not see any tags inside, but I got them from Wal-Mart.  If you're near one check there.

Thanks Ron, I wasn't sure what they were called. My Mom wears them all the time They are so soft and hold up pretty good to the washing machine. It is so funny my Dog trys to steal one every time one falls from the dryer. Not that it hasn't crossed my mind a couple of times. Would have many puppet uses.

that fabric might work on a wire puppet I am making, it's a bear character and could use some fur that stretches. maybe I'll just get some of the socks and cut them up.

Ron,
It might be this http://www.fleecelady.com/product.php?category=3&id=1442  I have requested a sample.  I can't tell from their description if it stretches or not.

Thanks for the replies folks. My son and I were goofing around with a moving mouth puppet head made from a tennis ball the other day, and I was trying to think of something stretchy to cover it.

I just recieved a sample packet from Foust Textiles in N.C. and this fabric is called Flurr fabric. It comes in a variety of colors. I did a search and is availble wholesale and retail.
