YAY!!!
Re: Am I crazy? A marionette question Posted by Na on Apr 30, 2008
indeed!
The test foam is now dry, and I'm really pleased with the way the glue worked. It's dried clear, didn't smell, was easy to use, dries quickly (after a few minutes of applying the glue had taken hold, but now it's no longer tacky and is completely firm), and the seam is quite strong too.
I have now found my brand new friend for foam building!

I think I've used a similar glue and yes, it has to tack up some before joining the 2 pieces of foam. You'll probably find that CP Ultimate (if you can get some) works better since it works like a contact adhesive. The glue have, if it's what I think it is, is a wet glue where the pieces have to be in contact some how while the glue dries.

Yes, I found I had to make sure that the foam pieces didn't come apart, as the glue dried. However, I usually pin my foam together anyway during gluing, so it didn't bother me much... Anyway, at least it's a substitute for the glue I've been using lately, which was nasty in smell and not very good.

If you can't find the CP Ultimate I would be able to supply you with some. I'm not a dealer however.

Thanks - I think I'll see how Foam Glue goes, and then worry about it. I've been pretty busy making shadow puppets, so until I get to my foam marionette (which will be a while) I'm not going to need it.

mmmmmmmmmm shadow puppets!!! I have been into these recently, too. I was inspired by a wonderful silhouette artist, Kara Walker. If you have never heard of her, please check out her work. It is AMAZING to say the least. At first glance, one sees pretty little silhouettes but if you look closely, there are some dark hidden imageries. The following is my favorite work by her

Here is a site that features some of her work

and one more video clip must see!!!
Now, of course I don't want to make shadow puppets with the harsh content like this wonderful artist does but just the use of silhouettes has been such a driving force to dabble in the art of cut paper and/or leather. I have been using silhouette paper and also chip board to create a more sturdy puppet. When I cut with only paper, I have been using a surgeons scissors that I picked up at the University book store. It's great having a medical school nearby so I can get access to their awesome tools. Speaking of tools, it is also great to have a dental school nearby because you can get the BEST sculpting tools....ha ha ha!!!
I would love to hear more about the shadow puppetry that was offered at the Unima Fest that you attended, Na. I'm still so sad that I didn't make it but for sure I will in 2012...hehe.
Aloha,
Nikole

You began by asking about contruction (I assume you mean limbs, legs and arms) without carving...just laminate thin plywood between carved pieces of styrofoam. It gives you some weight, yet it's easy to shape, since the wood section is so thin. You're looking for something like interior wall paneling.

Thanks for the advice Docmic. I hadn't thought of doing that!
