Foam questions Posted by luv2beeamommy on May 14, 2008
Ok so I see alot of people starting thier puppets as foam . How do you do that ? I have tried but cant get shapes to be how I need . I know how to build the puppet out of fur or fleece and then add foam underneath . But is it easier  to make it out of foam and then cover it ? Any help would be great thanks !

Two things:

First, you build the puppet out of foam, and then add the fur/fleece later, as a covering. It's ten times harder to build the fur first, and then the foam. Start with the foam first, then add your fur/fleece.

Second, what kind of shape are you trying to get? Perhaps we can suggest a site/picture that has a pattern that you could use.

Generally, if you want to try and make a particular shape out of foam, you should start working with paper. Create a paper pattern first, and then use the pattern to cut out your foam. That way you can try to cut out a shape that you want, and you don't waste your foam trying to get it right.

You can see in this thread:

how I created a paper pattern for a bell-shaped head. By gluing along the 'darts' (the cut-out triangle-shaped areas), I got a bell shape. (You can see in the picture the stickytape that I used to temporarily hold the 'darts' together). The image is of a pattern that made the front and back of the head.

I have a question too about this.
The darts you put somewhere in the pattern. How do you know where the have too is there a tip for it.
I'm what to cover a plastic egg with a a few strips of paper manche. Take that off the egg and use that for making a pattern with darts some where. Is that trying and discovering  or can somebody give a glue for it.....

The dart will be at or near the center of the tuck you want to make.  It's easier to do with fabric because your already have a shape your trying to cover.

Whe I'm making a foam piece I'm unsure of I like to make a paper mock up of the piece first.  This helps to work out some of those questions without ruining valuable foam.

Maybe you should start with a simple shape, like a round head. I make a semi-circle, with two darts on either side of the round part of the circle, and then one dart at the top, centre. Gluing those darts together creates a round-shaped piece of foam, like a half a ball.

It may be easier to use the 'panel' method - take a look at a basketball, football or other shaped ball, and see how it is made. A football for example has four panels, that are sewn along each edge to make the shape.

Do you have a copy of 'The Foam Book'? If not, you may want to borrow or buy a copy. It has a lot of great info on how to make different shaped foam heads, and how to create your pattern

I'm trying to get it but it is not easy here in Holland...... The local bookstore is trying to order it. I have to wait....... I can't borrow the book I'm to far away from counties where the book is available and the library don't has it..... (not even another books in this kind of stuff) For Now I only has a few patterns form internet and luckely this forum........

what is a    paper muck up    is that a try out in paper ??

I'm planning to make a bear ,as my first foam puppet, his head must be round. Some where on the internet I found a pattern of a bear with a round shape. I think it is from bear town.  I don't like the nose so that has to be
changed.
I only have to find time somewhere.............

Yes a paper "mock" up is a try out using paper.  It is not always perfect since paper reacts different then foam or fabric but it give you a general idea of what the shape well end up being. You can also use cheap fabric to do this if you want to get a better idea. A cotton fabric that cost very little can be used and then you can actually sometimes make changes right on your mock up fabric pattern.

Oh yes, sorry I forgot you were still looking for the book. If you want, I could email you the paper patterns I used for creating this round head:

It's three pieces: the top of the head is two pieces, and the third is the bottom jaw.

Ok well I'm wanting to do a monkey how do I draw that kind of pattern I'm used to side views so this seem hard to me .

Before you make the foam head you have to imagine the head as the different shapes the the head is made from.  First is the major shape for the head, this might be a sphere, an egg shape, or a domed, or etc.  Then you have to imagine the shapes that are added to the head that give the different features; the nose, the ears, the chin, the cheeks, eyes and eye brows. Different puppets obviously will require different shapes.  I like to have a picture of the puppet so that I can more easily figure out what the shapes are for the puppet build.

Sean Johnson with Swazzle does a good job describing this process at the following link. http://swazzle.com/blogs/2006/03/puppet-building-tutorial-ratchet.html.
