the foambook questions Posted by gompie on May 25, 2008
I just bought "the foam book" and it's a super great book. I learn a lot but I'm dutch and there are materials mentioned in the book I don't know here maybe there is something that looks like it here. So who can help me to explain what it is.

foam core what I understand that in the middle is Styrofoam, if I am wright thats the stuff that around TV or DVD players to protect it when you buy them. And than on both sides paper. I'm I wright or is it something else.

sculpt or coat is that a kind of liquid latex ?

Foam Core is about 1/4 " thick board it has a foamy type of center but still hardish and then it has white paper on each side.  People may use it to make nice signs out of it or they may build a small theater set from the material to get an idea what the stage will look like before it is built.  You can find it in large craft stores or a place for engineers materials.  I hope this helps a little.

I think that sculpt or coat is a podge like make up but thicker and does not dry clear.  I think you can only get it in America but I could be very wrong.  You may have a similar material bout your way just under a different name.  It is very safe to use.  If you can't get it don't get hung up about it you can make puppets without the material and find alternative ways to get the same results and even better.  Sculpt or coat gets really gooy in hot or warm weather so it is something I say away from.

I don't know if this helps - but I exchange the foam core for illustrator board (thick cardboard), and the sculpt and coat with PVA (American's know it as Elmer's Glue... don't know what the equivalent is elsewhere).

I also often substitute the foam core with a thin piece of foam, and cover it with felt -- it makes a very good, flexible mouth.

foam core I know what it is.. I can get it, the local supermarket use that kind of material for sign for advetisments in the shop.

but sculpt or coat is A glue so liquid and than is there a name on the bottle or a company . I'm still thinking about liquid latex..... I only want to know what it is so I can fully understand how they make their puppets..and find alternatives. I can lool for elmer glue (almost elmo glue )

what I want to know is what does this stuff. When it's dried is it still flexible or stiff I saw on the internet that it is a plastic cream. Make it a plastic lager around the mouth........

Yes Sculpt or Coat is flexible. It is like liquid latex.

Elmers Glue is a simple white glue. It is what children often use in school for projects.

You could maybe use a product called Tool Dip. I am not sure that you have it in your country but here in the USA they sell it in hardware stores. It is designed to be used on the handles of tools to make a rubber coating on tools that are bare metal.  It comes in both a liquid form you "dip" the tool in or in a spray can that can be sprayed onto the surface of something. I often use the spary can type to coat bare foam to give it a rubber surface.

You might want to talk to johian since you both speak the same language.  He may be able to explain what the alternatives are in your country better then we can.  In fact if you ever want to post something in your own language that you think would help others with translation of things feel free to do so.  While I know there are online translators, they do not always do the best job of translation on things like this.
