Question on Puppet Height, Arm Length and Poseable Fingers Posted by Angel on May 29, 2008
Can someone give me a general ideal on a good puppet height from the top of the head to the bottom of the torso (legs not included) and what is a good arm span, from finger tip to finger tip (these measurements would be for an average size puppet, not like a sock puppet). Also would you or do you charge for adding wire to fingers to make them poseable?

Thanks
Angel

Even though I haven't made any puppets for pay, I''ll throw my two cents into your questions.

With my puppets I try to shoot for the 24 inch height.  That's still comfortable for most teenagers and adults.  Of course the personality and character of the puppet is sometimes a factor in the scale of the puppet the that's the average I shoot for.  The arm span is all relative to the look I want for the puppet.  Once the head and body are built I eye ball the length of the arms so that they look good to me.

I think if you were offering both posable and non-posable hands on your puppets the posable hands would cost more than the non.  That being said I've decided that the advantages of posable hands is such that all the puppets I will build from now on will have posable or practical hands.  The extra effort simply makes for a more versatile puppet.

I can't say on the height/width, because.. well, frankly, I never think about it. I just make the puppets a good height depending on both the character, and what feels right when I'm making it... It's probably not the best way to go
but hey, it works for me!

I'd say charge for making them poseable. I don't know about you, but adding wire to hands does make the build a little more time-consuming; and you have to include the wire in your materials budget, which you should be covered in the purchase price.
