There are no stupid questions. As to shape if you look at the muppet characters you'll notice that there are a variety of sizes and shapes depending on the look the designer was going for. The same is true for you. Decide first what you want your puppet to look like then look at the sketch on the paper or picture you have in your head and decide if the head is round, oval, egg shaped, etc.
The only advise I have about size is make sure that the head is big enough to accept your hand. If you want a moving mouth puppet smaller than that you'll make to make a mechanism to move the mouth. I'd recommend starting with one that will accept your hand.
For reference I'll just say that when I make a round headed puppet one side of the head pattern just fits on a sheet of standard letter sized paper.

Hi Jovack,
Just like Jon says, there are not stupid questions...except one that is not asked.
First of all, welcome to the group! And thanks for posting. Last year, when i first started to dab into puppet making, i had no idea as well how to do a puppet. So i surfed the net and found a great website with ALOT of information. Ironically, its the website of a very good member here and a friend of mine, Michele. Here is the url of her website: http://www.puppet-planet.com/ Just go into the "link" section and there you will find quite a few info. You can even find a few free patterns (Kermit and Scooter for example). With these, you will see how head patterns are made and with a few modifications and alot of tests, i am sure you will eventually find a way to make your own head pattern.
There is also a great tutorial there that could help you out on how to make the head. http://puppet-planet.com/Nunpuppettutorial.html Yes, it is a nun puppet, but the joy in puppetry is that we can addapt pretty much any pattern to our work.
But if you are still mixed up, dont hesitate in asking. I am sure that you will find even more people here who will be more than willing to help you out.
Huge puppet hug,
SHould
