My project Posted by Hamsteri on Jun 26, 2008
So nice to be here! And so much great things to do.
Now I´am planning a puppet theatre play. I just started this project. Here some pictures ... more to come.

I really like the look of the puppets so far. Are you using papier mache?

Hi Na!

Yes, I use papier mache. Papier mache is just a great material. You can do almost anything about it. I love it!

I thought so - they're really great! The papier mache looks very smooth. Do you use strips of paper or more of a pulp?

Indeed a wonderful work of art. Please do keep us updated on the progress of the play.

They really look great!  Can't wait to see the finished project!

Hi again!
I use pulp. It is very easy to process and make different kind of shapes. Usually there is some kind of supporting structure inside heads and hands (paper or wire).

This time I want to make rod puppets with moving head. I mean that puppet could say "yes" by nodding her/his head up and down. And also saying "no" by moving her/his head left to right. Have anyone ideas how to do that? I have my own plannings on paper (I don´t know yet if those plannings works in practice).

Cool - I usually use strips, but I think I'll use a pulp from now on. Yours comes out much smoother than mine.

Perhaps you could let us know more about your plans? And how the body will be constructed. Then we could help you figure out how to move the head. The first idea that comes to mind is a bunraku neck and rod mechanism. I've made something very similar recently with a papier mache head and a wooden neck, and a trigger installed into a control on the neck piece. You can find some of the pictures of what I did here:

(search for bunraku to make it easier to find, I still haven't gotten around to sorting the pics)

Wow, i love the look of your puppets! They seem so old and wise, just like the stones surrounding us. Cant wait to see how you will proceed for your next step.

Hi friends!

Bunraku mechansim sounds good. I tried to find instructions how to do that kind of head mechansim, but didn´t found good one.

I try to explain what I´am looking for ... but perhaps better put some pictures first.

I have planned so that with my left hand, I could move my puppets hands (with rod). Then with my right hands thumb, I could make puppets move his/her head left and right. And with all the other fingers (right hand), I could make puppets nodding his/her head. Hope you got the idea! (It´s difficult to explain in English).
