does somebody knows how they made the butterfly........................
Re: Barenaked Ladies music video Posted by Shawn on Jul 01, 2008
The butterfly is simply a piece of spring wire also know as piano wire that has a felt butterfly attached to the end of it.

Spring wire is comes not in a roll but in a straight "rod".  It is very hard to bend because it has what they call memory in it. I can only find it at a very old hardware store here in Kansas City Mo. This hardware store is locally owned and like how hardware stores used to be back before the big major companies.

If you can not find such a wire where you are you could try using some other wire. It would need to be pretty thin but still not bend easily. You could maybe use a wood dowel with a small spring on the end that had the butterfly built around it and get a similar effect.

Piano Wire can also be found at hobby stores that sell flying model plains and train sets (professionally).  People use them in radio model plains for stronger structure.

Hope this helps you out with other places to consider.......

I also wonder if you could find something at a music store that sell guitar strings or even the piano strings. I assume that the wires for those are similar but higher quality to attain a unique tone. If you open up a guitar string coil it "straightens' out, the only thing is I am not sure that a guitar string is a high enough gauge to use for this.

I have one street a way a pianoshop He probilly have old once he don't have to use anymore. A guitar string isn't that not to bendable.......
