Dalek in rock for 99 Acre Doctor Who short Posted by DrPuppet on Jul 04, 2008
This is the Dalek encased in rock for our up and coming Doctor who 99 Acre Short. David has been helping us with this one and managed to get us British voices for the doctor so it would sound better. As we finish more of the project I will post it up here if you want to see.

Looks great, I want details! How was he created? The rock looks extraordinary, I love the color and texture.

Thanks for the credit Jay but its less me than the actual voice over doing the Doc! The Dalek looks fantastic!
I wouldn't risk painting my remote control dalek like that not after the amount they cost originally! Will you be operating the dalek via the remote or moving the eye and operating the lights by another means?
Rocks made of paper mache? Or polystyrene? Though it does look like he's temporal shifted into a pile of poo but knowing what 99 Acres is like I know its meant to be rock! :p
But yes, I look forward to this in the final production. Also what scale will the dalek be in relation to the other cast? Will you be shooting him in such a manner he is the full size dalek he is meant to be? or will he be the size on screen as Bud and co.?

OK The dalek is a remote control one we found on amazon for 30 bucks. We wanteed to salvage him afterwards so we painted him with mostly water based colors paints that can be rubbed off. Now I could have built my own dalek I have a vacuum form machine but it was really a cost and time factor stopping me. To keep the dalek from being damaged by the plaster I covered the areas of him being plastered by masking tape. Now the rock itself was balled up newspaper taped together then we painted plastered over the top. While still damp but not mushy I used various colors of rit dye and sponge painted him so the color would pool in different areas. after he dried for a day I used acrylic paint on the bootom portion for the green mossy detail and some of the highlight areas.
That's about it actually. The whole project including the dalek cost about 50 bucks. The build him from scratch would have taken a few weeks and been closer to a hundred or so.

The scale of it will be full size compared to the puppets. The rock will be green screened into the final shot. We are even discussing now building the rest of the cave around it since all this came out so well. If we do i will send building photos.

Nice.
Will you be operating the dalek via the remote control? or via another means, I can imagine, without careful editing, it may be impossible to do the dalek lights and voice together.... oh wait... whose doing the dalek voice? someone else I need to get hold of?
Personally, I'd take a high resolution picture of the rock texture and use that picture when making a CGI version of the rest of the rock in the final shot. Yes, it'd look brilliant with more of the around him but I'd fear you wasting time or money! :P

We have been able to time out the eye blinks with voice I have been trying to use a piece of software to create the voice but its been challenging. If you have any suggestions I would love to hear them.

Its all in the performance of the voice than the actual modulation. Google a program called Hog, a search of 'hog ring modulation' will bring it up. Its a free little program where you put the recording of the in the input, select a modulation frequencey, 25 to 30 is best and then output.
I'll share my recent dalek voice as a demonstration.
