My bunraku puppet is finally finished Posted by Na on Jul 06, 2008
There's a video on my blog, plus a little more explanation and links to more photos:

I didn't really explain a lot of how it was built, so if anyone wants to know more about how it's done, let me know. Here's an image to whet the appetite:

Na, very nice puppet. I can tell that building a bunraku puppet is not an easy process and I think you should be proud of how well you have done.
You said that you wanted the character to have an evil look and you definitely achieved that. Great idea to not give him actual arms but to simply suggest the arms with the cloak. I think it gives a phantom like feel to the way he works and moves. Well done.

Thanks! I'm a bit disappointed with the trigger switch, but still very happy. I paid $AUD 250 for the masterclass - would have paid anything to learn to make a bunraku puppet - and it was so worth it. I've adored this style of puppetry for several years, and it was really wonderful to learn from a Japanese puppet maker.

Planned out? Not really
I was actually making a female head, and then Nori saw the clay design and said it was a great male! I realised he was right, and continued that way. And although I had an idea of how the character might look, I really guessed when it came time to painting. I initially painted the eyes and mouth, and then did a matte black for the head - it looked awful!
Then I remembered a friend of mine, who made a great mask and sponge painted layers of grey for texture and it looked great, so I did the same.
When it came to costume making, I got out the materials I knew I wanted to use, and didn't really know what I was going to do with them. I just tried draping them over the shoulder board, and voila!
Also, you may remember I posted a thread a while ago for black spiky hair? Well, I tried spiky fake flowers and a weird cloth wig, but nothing was right. As soon as I tried the mohair felting wool, it was ideal.
So you see, most of the design was by accident or trial and error!

Congratulations!
I want to learn to make a bunraku puppet too! In Finland, how can I find same kind of masterclass like you found Na? Maybe someday?!

I don't know whether there would be classes in Finland... my suggestion is to contact the Japanese tutor that we had, Nori Sawa. Although he's Japanese, he lives in Czech, so he might know of somewhere or someone closer to your part of the world. He also travels a lot doing workshops, so it's possible he could do one in your area. His website is:
http://www.puppet-house.co.jp/nori/sawa.htm
I'm not sure if his email address is listed there, but I have it and could message it to you if you like.
Also, there are some useful videos at www.puppetbuilding.com, which might help.
If you still need some help, I could try writing up my notes that I took from the class, and send them to you.
