brand new to puppetry Posted by BiZcut on Jul 13, 2008
just thought i would say hi to all you wonderful puppet makers and preformers. for the last few months i have been watching youtube vids and trying to read as many tutorials on muppet style puppets. i have been developing a growing interest in puppetry and would like to ake and preform but i am not sure whre else to look. I decided to make a puppet to see if i could based off of the vids i watched (which were great BTW). i searched around the house for some materials to make one with and came across a bath towel in the rag drawer. I freehanded a patern trying my best to replicate what i had seen in the vids and wnet to work. the head is a bit lopsided because i cant draw to save my live and his eyes are currently a couple pieces of whit washcloth scrap draw on with a sharpe. the other day i went out and picked up some toddler clothes from a local thrift store and i must say "Carlos" is comming along. My kids love it when i get him out and goof off with him. I have even taken him to work with me a few times. I am a paramedic and i like to lean my seat back while we draive around town making him look at the cars next to us when we pull up to stop lights. anyways i am looking for some possible information or gatherings of puppeteres in my area of Kansas city MO so that i cant find out some more information and get involved with it a bit more.thanks for reading

Welcome to the group, it's great having you here.
Nice job on Carlos - it looks like he has a fun, quirky personality
Kansas City MO, huh? I could swear that there is somebody else in our family here who is based there...

Though he doesn't sponsor a local puppetry group, as far as I know, maybe you guys could get in touch some time.
I remember reading about one or two annual puppetry events within driving distance of you, but can't recall the details at the moment. You could try Googling around, or checking the Puppeteers of America web site for more information about puppetry in your area.
Here's a start for you...

Now how in the world did I miss the reference to KCMO when I first read this post.
There is a local PofA Guild in KCMO, two very active puppetry companies called StoneLion Puppets and Paul Mesner Puppets and to top it off there is the Puppetry Arts Institute in Independence, Mo.
