have a look at these and see what you think. The artist uses matboard with a lasercutter. I have no idea if it is useable with a knife but the shadow puppets she makes are lovely.

I have Currell's book, it is fabulous and well worth investing in.

Matboard is the same as illustrator board...

Thanks a lot for the links! So, on illustration boards... I will try that. Cutting rubber plates is not so easy on small details.

I haven't tried rubber before, but no, it doesn't sound easy.
