Using Floodlights for Stage Lighting Posted by Gabriel G on Jul 22, 2008
I'm looking into getting some portable lighting for my team's stage when we do our programs and we want to be able to control it. Theatrical lighting trees are too big an investment at the moment for our budget so I'm looking for 'cheaper' ways and was recommended to try floodlights on stands. The problem is I don't really know what to look for and how I'd be able to get them wired onto a board so they could be controlled by our sound tech.
Does anyone have recommendations or experience with working with floodlights?

I don't need them as spotlights, I'd just have one on each side of the stage to cast the shadows in and provide greater control of the lighting.

Any and all help is appreciated!

Check out this link. http://www.colomar.com/Shavano/lighting.html
It should give you a fairly good idea of what you need and how to build the system.

Update, you may want to check this link and verify the information. http://www.northern.edu/wild/th241/homemade.htm

They say it is not legal to use a home made lighting system in a public place. Check it out before you spend time and money to build something.

If all you need is a light to fill in shadows, use a clamp light attached to a tripod, or an inexpensive filming light. You can plug it into a remote control device, found in Lowes, Home Depot, etc. and your sound tech can operate them.
