More eyes Posted by Magenta on Jul 28, 2008
I am working on these for doll eyes, but they would work here as well.
I made the eyeball out of cold porcelain. The recipe follows below.
Next I made the round ball and pushed a hollow into it with a dowel rod. Let the eyeball dry. Paint the eyeball white. I didn't do this here, but I will for the ones I will use.
I cut out and glued on a iris. I made the iris the same as in my pretty eyes tut.
Then I filled the rest of the hollow with clear nail polish.
After the polish dries you can coat the whole eye with it to make it look wet if you like.
Cold Porcelain Clay
1. Combine in a Teflon coated pot:
1 cup polyvinyl acetate glue such as Elmer’s Glue All(any white glue)
1 cup cornstarch
2 tablespoons baby oil (any oil should work even canola)
1 tablespoon lemon juice.
2. Cook on low heat stirring constantly for 10 minutes or until dough forms and begins to come away from the sides.
This can also be done in the microwave in a heat safe bowl at intervals of 30 seconds. Stir well at each stop and heat until it resembles ricotta cheese and pulls away from side of bowl. It only takes 1:30 to 2 minutes in the microwave.
3. Remove from heat and allow to cool until you can handle it.
4. Knead into a smooth clay consistency.
5. Store in a cool, dark place
6. Tempera powder or acrylic paints may be used for coloring the dough before shaping.
*If your clay cracks as it dries try adding more water to your dough. It should be wet to the point it's sticky. Oil your hands to work with the clay. This should solve the problem*

Thanks again Meg............ got this saved to my clay recipes. Can't get those irises made yet using the tutorial you sent me. I'll get with you on that.

Magenta you are so clever! Thanks for sharing! How do you cut out your irises?
Re: More eyes Posted by Magenta on Jul 29, 2008
I just used scissors. If the eyeball is white you wont notice the little white edge.

I thought you mounted the eyes on clear plastic spoons. Are you using something else that you can cut with a scissors?

Meg makes the irises on the computer and prints them out on a high quality photo paper. She then cuts them out of the paper and places them on the clear spoons or as she did here using the Cold porcelian. It does give a realistic looking eye.

Oh, is it just the paper eye on the porcelain? No plastic topcoat?
Re: More eyes Posted by Billy D. Fuller on Jul 30, 2008
Once she paste the eye on to the indention of the porcelain she then fills it in with clear nail polish. When she used the clear plastic spoons.... she glued them on the inside of the spoon and painted over the back of the eye with white paint. as she shows in this tutorial

Perhaps Meg will stop by and verify this................ I would hate to tell you wrong.
