Olympics feature Chinese marionettes Posted by Na on Aug 14, 2008
I watched the opening ceremony, but coverage didn't include a lot of the marionettes. So I was very happy to stumble onto this short video of just the marionette performance:

Unfortunately, quality isn't great, and there aren't a lot of close ups...

I love your find.....I missed the whole thing and didn't realize that they had puppets in the show.

Thanks for finding and sharing with us.

It was good, but disappointingly coverage tended to focus more on the large groups of synchronised performers, rather than the smaller puppeteers/puppets in the middle. I got so excited when I saw them, and then started to get annoyed when they didn't show the details... don't they realise people out there want to see puppets?

Anyway, I wasn't purposefully looking for the video, but just stumbled on it. I'm glad I did, because they're really quite beautiful.

I watched the opening ceremony and totally missed this. There was so much activity I did not even noticed the marionettes. The next day It was all over the net that puppets had been used. Thanks Na for the video...now I can say I've seen them.

The opening by the way was spectacular. I'll keep my polictical views to myself.

Oh, I was watching intently. Whatever my opinions on the political situation, I'm a big fan of Chinese period movies, the drumming, as well as some of the martial arts. (I loved the 'tai chi' segment, and the opening contemporary dance with the caligraphy... I found most of the ceremony pretty uninspired though) The opening ceremony was directed by Zhang Yimou, who's famous for House of Flying Daggers.

I'm glad they chose to show the marionettes. I only wish they'd been on for longer.
