Re: What happened to the puppet making videos Posted by Angel on Aug 16, 2008
Hi Jay,
I'm in on what ever you decide to do.  I was very fortunate to have gotten a chance to view your videos and I learned several new techniques.  It's hard to put a price on knowledge and you have a lot when it comes to puppet making, so that's a call that only you can make, but I am willing to purchase your vids and pattern when ever you decide to sell them.  The price is extremely reasonable for beginners or for someone who has been building for awhile.  I have purchased patterns before but to actually have someone walk you through the building process along with tips is priceless.  Just let us know what you decide and DEFINETLY count me in.  I also would like to purchase a DVD if you go that route.

Thanks for sharing,
Angel

Jay,
I would rather pay you more to be frank.  I just paid $80 for my armslength video and was pleased as punch.  I would up the amount to at least $10.  A hard copy version would be preferrable to me, and I'd pay you $20 for each that you mentioned.  I would still consider that a bargain.

Jay, it's definitely reasonable to ask for compensation for your effort and expertise.  How much depends on on your goal for providing the videos.  If you're wanting to be paid for the quality of the material you're providing then $3-5 is way, way, way too low.  If you're wanting to be nice and at the same time cover your expenses then perhaps it's about right.

I just want to go on record and say that there is nothing wrong with making a little money.  You are providing a valuable service by making your experience and ability so easily available to the puppet making community.  If we were sitting in on a workshop it would cost much, much more.  You deserve to be appropriately compensated just as much as any other instructor

My suggestion, clearly identify your currrent goals for the video tutorials you have made and price them in a way that best meets your goals.

Here Here................. I agree............. I'm getting them all no matter what they cost. I will support Jay in anyway possible. I know how much time goes into making a video and you should be compensated. It is however left up to you!

Just for the record Jay I'm placing my pre-order in now! so put my name on your list.

Jay,
I should have added more to my comments. Could be ME (most likely is), but I read in your offering of the videos for a fee, that perhaps you felt you would being charging too much, thus my SIMPLE statement "sounds good and fair to me."

As others have already said, you are offering a great service to all, and it is well worth a higher charge than what you requesting. Many have already paid more, for less than what you're offering.

Whatever way you go, this group here, will more than support you.

Thanks for your wonderful offer.

Donald

I have been reading this topic with great interest and Dr.Puppet you should think quite hard about how much you will charge for these videos. Not only have you gone to the trouble and time of filming and uploading, but you are also showing your building and making methods of the puppets that you sell. This is worth far more than $3. Puppet building is learnt through experience and you cant put a price on your own hard work and expertise.
Re: What happened to the puppet making videos Posted by DrPuppet on Aug 17, 2008
I apreciate it but i want it to be accesable to everyone. I am basing my prices on other videos on itunes and podcasts. One the page is done and everything is set I will look at it again but I am sure the numbers are going to work.

Jay

Seems like you have done your homework............ With all the resources available you can offer your product at a reasonable price affordable for everyone. With Ipods and all the on the go products this is a good way to go. If at a later date you wish to put these on a hard disk, with a cover, Marketing, packaging ,etc,etc............ then of course your cost goes up. this would then cause for a higher retail price. I look at this as good way for you to expose your talents............ And will most likely get you more building orders from companys wishing to hire you for your talents.
I'm looking foward to the release of these videos......... I will link them on my website however you want.

Yeah the first videos I watched on my iphone while taking a trip into San Francisco.  I mention this because It took me forever to find a good conversion app to change video to be compatible with it.  Not to mention when I was working on the stitching I just grabbed the iphone and watched the stitch tutorial.  So for the full tutorial to be on itunes would be perfect for someone like me who relies on there ipod/iphone.
