Does Roly Project Puppet have flip top? Posted by puppetbubba on Sep 10, 2008
I have read a lot about flip top and some companies puppets having severe flip-top.  I have also read about having neck pull, each time you move the mouth the neck pulls and looks unnatural.  I am wondering if the simple series roly puppet from project puppet has this problem?  The neck in some of the photos looks like it kind of melts into the face and is not very seperate.  Would this cause a problem when using a puppet for shows?

I am sorry to be asking so many questions.  I am a bit picky and I don't want to spend money on a pattern if it is not going to produce a properly funtioning puppet.  I want to do my research before forking over the money! I don't mind paying for a pattern but I want to be sure I can use it over and over with good results.  Also, do the project puppet patterns come with detailed instructions so even the least experienced puppet maker (....me....) can follow along without getting super frustrated and lost?

IMO All I can say is that you shouldn't be disappointed with Project Puppet.....you get what you pay for.   If you go to the sight you will see pictures of what people made with each of the patterns provided some very impressive work and all nice patterns.  Instructions are very clear and take you step by step with pictures.

Hey Barb!

And about that, many patterns have a 'flip top' style puppete however this isn't the problem when it comes to the puppet. The problem is that when people manipulate the puppet they have a tendency of "flipping the lid", that is using their fingers, rather than their thumb, to open the mouth. The key is to drop your thumb AND to bend your wrist a bit so the puppet maintains good eye contact. And as for the neck, looking at the pictures I kinda see what you mean. I haven't worked with the roly yet but I doubt it should be a problem during performances. But ProjectPuppet patterns in general are highly regarded in the building world and its not for just any reason!

And there's no such thing as too many questions! We can understand the concern with it. And Project Puppet Simple Series are made with beginners in mind so it should be relatively easy, and if you ever have problems you can always post here =]
