Nyrdl the Turtle Posted by dubya on Sep 14, 2008
Just getting around to posting pics of the glorified sock mod I created at a Hands On workshop at I-Fest '08.  My first experience with hand stitching didn't go too badly (although I did have to re-sew his arms on later, as they were getting loose).

Dub,
Were you the model?   Great job. Did you hand sew the whole puppet? He is just too cute. Say Hi to Angie for me.

Are you atomic puppets? Nyrdl is sweet!  I like the two colour eye lids with unique eyeballs.

Man, I wanna go to Ifest.  Who taught your class?
Re: Nyrdl the Turtle Posted by dubya on Sep 15, 2008
@jomama:  Of course I was the model.  Did you notice the faint resemblance in the pic of both of us?  Only hand-sewed the mouth fabric into the head piece and then the head piece onto the body;  also the arms onto the body (had a few problems getting my stitches to keep there).

Used a machine to sew the two head halves together and the front and back body pieces.  My first experience with using nylon thread (I think the majority of the 20 who took the class were ready to throw their machines away--nylon thread didn't work too smoothly with them).

@LJ:  I added a small shell (you can see it on a few pics in my gallery).  It was hard to figure out a good size without making it much too large for practical use.  I had to finally settle on the fact that you wouldn't be able to really see the shell unless he was scooting across the stage sideways.

@puppetlady: I am one half of ATOMIC Puppets (and Willuppets if we ever get it up and running).  I originally covered the eyes in light blue, but didn't like how it looked after I glued them on, so I took a scrap of the skin and covered over most of them, leaving the two-tone look on Nyrdl's "crazy eye".

IFEST was probably the best puppet-related experience of my lifetime.  Ryan Spittler (I believe he works for OWS) taught the hands-on workshop.  It was the first time the Glorified Sock was offered as a workshop.  It seemed to really go over well.  Due to licensing restriction, we didn't get to keep the pattern we used, but plenty of vendors had it for sale in the resource area.  I've been slow in getting started with my next one--I think I'm going to try to make a couple of sheep similar in appearance to the ones on the OWS website.  I'll post pics when I can ever get started.

General Note:  Can anyone tell me how to get more space allocated to my gallery to upload pics?  Is it a fixed size or does in increase with your post count?   Just curious.

Thanks for all of your comments!  Puppet building is a great experience.
