Science Project Posted by Puppet-Planet on Sep 22, 2008

Something I thought would be fun to share:

My oldest had to create a model of an animal cell for her high school honors biology class. She was given the freedom to use any materials she wished, so she ran sacked my puppet supply storage for the goods.

She found an old Project Puppet Rotundo foam head (cut off the jaw), some ostrich feathers, pom poms, pipe cleaners, styrofoam ball, stiffened felt, 1/4 inch foam (spray painted gold) & LOTS of hot glue... with a little burn blister to show for it.

I tried to talk her into making it a talking cell by cutting the lid of a head off leaving the working mouth below but she thought the other kids would make fun of her if she brought a "puppet" to class.    Personally, I think it would have been a huge hit... but this turned out pretty cool too.

Michele it is apparent that the fruit does not fall to far from the tree. Your daughter was pretty persistent to use her own creative talents which by the way looks like she may have landed a ( A+ )

VERY FUN!!  I agree it would have been fun to have made it into a talking cell!  It is so fun to see what kids come up with!!  Your daughter is beautiful by the way - you better keep the doors locked!!

That is sooooo awesome!  I used to work in a genetics lab as a karyotypist so I know chromosomes really well and I love her cell.  I think she would have a career with the people that design the microbe plushies.  Someone gave me the common cold plushie and I love it so much.  Here is the link to the yummy nerdy toys:

Tell her to apply when she graduates!  HA HA HA
Excellent job!!!

That link is bizarre!  I have a hard time imagining myself giving someone a Herpes plush toy.

Thats hillarious!  I would think the Herpes plush would be an appropriate one to send to ex's, some good humored fun.

Thanks!  Thats actually left over from my display at the Kidabra convention..... where I shared a room with LJ. How are ya girl!

I'm debating weather or not to bring her to my next magic convention coming up in November here in Florida, or if I should just list her on eBay and make new stuff to display. It's always a hard choice for me, I like the idea of not having to rush as much by bringing left over stuff..... but I also like making new things.

Thank you everyone for all of the comments on Sky's project. She came home today all proud because there was a possible 150 points and she found out that she received full credit for her work.

That is a great cell....thanks for sharing....a talking cell would have been cool also.....but as you know, teenagers they have certain boundaries and they won't cross them.

My son made a lung out of foam in his first year of High School....the science teacher still has it displayed in his classroom...he just loved it and never thought of making anything out of foam.

I love foam and all the things you can do with it.

Thanks for sharing this great news and your daughter should be proud of the work she has done.

Glad the project turned out so well!!!  When my son was in high school he built a castle out of foam using my husbands hot wire to carve it and then painting it and sculpt - or - coating it too.  His teacher asked to keep it as an example of the best too!!  You never know where our puppet supplies will come in handy!!  Once again - puppetry has WAY MORE applications than most people realize!!
Michele - I am doing fine by the way!  It was fun rooming with you at Kidabra! I have realized that I learned more than I thought - despite certain frustrations!!!! (inside joke!)  By the way, do you still have the adorable girl monster puppet or did you sell her?

Hi LJ,

I just responded o your PM regarding the other question you had but I just now saw this post... I do still have the little girl monster. Has she been calling out to you in your sleep?

-Michele

I always get excited when my kids find different applications for my puppet supplies. I guess I'm just goofy that way.    I have a feeling that my youngest might be a budding puppet builder, she has way more interest in it than Sky did at her age. (Zoey is 7). She is already hand sewing her own finger puppets.... although the stiches are still a bit too far apart, so sometimes her finger pokes out through the side when she puts on the finished product.    At least she hasn't jabbed herself with the needle....... yet.
