Brazil Puppet Tutorial question Posted by puppetbubba on Sep 24, 2008
I love the puppet created with the Brazil Puppet tutorial, the one with the pattern available on their blog.  I haven't worked with foam in that way yet but plan to in the future.

My question is using the pattern provided can you make a fleece covering for the puppet?  Would it work or would the shape be way off when trying to cover the foam.  Does that make sense?  Basically I am wondering if the foam pattern can also be used as a covering.  I know with the Puppet Project puppets they cannot so I am assuming the same is true for this pattern.  I just don't totally understand the ins and outs of puppet construction.

Once I have more hands on experience I know I will figure it out, in the mean time I hope you don't mind all the questions.  Also, if it cannot be used, has anyone covered one in fleece or other material?  How in the world did you figure out how to do that?

I covered my Puppets Brazil puppet in fleece.  I used the same pattern as for the foam but added a little extra length to allow for the fabric to tuck into the mouth.  (This means making the crown shaped pattern piece taller.)  The width, if anything could be decreased by 1/2" if the stretch of the fleece is across the face (across the crown shape from right to left) to make for a snug fit into the mouth with no or little wrinkling.  Here is Mary-Jane in Antron fleece:

How did she "paint" her foam puppet?  Simply with spray paint, or is there something better?
And did she use Scott foam/reticulated foam?  Poly foam tears so easily, if you aren't going to cover.

That's a good question.  I don't know for certain, but I suspect she dyes her foam beforehand.  I've tried painting foam with Design Master floral spray as suggested in the Foam Book but I didn't like the results.  I'd suggest dying the foam -poly or reticulated.  I think Nice Braga uses 1 inch polyfoam for most of the puppet.  I've used 1/2 inch polyfoam under fleece.

I talk with her husband Cicero quite often and they use a airbrush gun and airbrush paints to color the foam. I believe they just use regular polyfoam.

I stand corrected.

Hey Billy, what does SS stand for on your new logo?  I like it by the way.

" SS " is and abreviation of a corperate business that my late Brother in law and I owned. He passed away of colon cancer a few years back and the business was desolved......... I have since just combined the old name into two letters in his memory. Thanks this logo was created by Shawn............... Cicero has been a big help to me as well.
