HOT GLUE temperature for foam Posted by tsu on Oct 09, 2008
Hi there,

I would like to ask you for something - when you use a glue gun to glue the foam, what kind of guns do you use? I mean - what temperature of? I did read that purpose of high temperature glues (around 190*C) is for gluing the ceramics and stuff like that meanwhile for foam people should use low temperature ones (around 120*C). How does it look in practise?

Thanks for any advices.

You can use either.  I used a high temp gun when I was a teen because that's all they had back then.  I now use a low temp gun to reduce the risk of blistering burns.

OK, I got it, thank you.

There are some guns that do both.

You mean: with a switch for low and high temperature? I think I've seen something like that while looking for the hot glue guns on the net...

I have both but the best tip I ever got was to keep a glass of ice water in your work area to stick you finger in once the glue gets on it. Just remember with any tool you work with in your puppet building shop safety is always of most importance.
They are also glue sticks for low and high temp. guns as well as colored glue sticks.

Good point of the glass of ice water, Billy. For sure I'll make use of your advice!
(but, haha, I used to burn myself anyway - I work in the area with the lamps of around 180*C, so there would be nothing new for me to burn my fingers... :P)

Cheers,

Yeah it has a switch.  I love it!! It makes doing heads so much easyier. Plus you never get burned by the glue. It's nice to have the option to select temps. This was a better option for me then having  the glass of water always by me. My cats would always nock the water over.   LOL
